Harbin Friendship Palace
Harbin Friendship Palace
Overview
Harbin Friendship Palace, originally named the “Sino-Soviet Friendship Palace,” was built in 1954 and has been recognized by China’s Ministry of Commerce as a “Time-Honored Brand of China.” Situated at the heart of the scenic riverside stretch along Youyi Road, it overlooks Sun Island Scenic Area, the Ice and Snow World, and the Northeast Tiger Park across the river. It is also just steps away from popular attractions such as the Zhaolin Park Ice Lantern Festival, St. Sophia Cathedral, and Central Street Pedestrian Zone, nestled in a bustling commercial district. The hotel’s palace‑style architecture, blending Chinese and Western elements, harmoniously integrates its courtyard landscapes with the natural beauty of the Songhua River, making it one of Harbin’s most iconic landmarks. Harbin Friendship Palace is an international tourism hotel offering multifunctional services—including conferences and exhibitions, accommodation and dining, and leisure and entertainment—and serves as both Harbin’s state guesthouse and Heilongjiang Province’s International Convention Center. The hotel features a grand theater in classic Western Baroque style, an international conference hall, and more than 30 meeting rooms of various sizes, capable of hosting large-scale conferences, musical performances, and cultural shows. Its three opulent banquet halls and numerous exquisitely decorated private rooms can accommodate up to 2,000 diners simultaneously. The Friendship Palace is home to the “Harbin Cuisine Research Institute,” one of the first nationally certified “Green Hotels of China,” and an “International Dining Excellence” award recipient from the World Hotel and Restaurant Association. Its distinctive “Harbin Cuisine” has become a staple on the menus for official banquets and high‑end business gatherings. The hotel’s Western restaurant carries forward traditional Russian culinary art, providing an ideal setting to savor authentic Russian‑style cuisine. Over six decades of development, Friendship Palace cuisine has preserved the genuine flavors of the era when Soviet experts came to assist China’s construction projects, distilling the essence of Sino‑Russian gastronomy. With its pure taste and unique cultural depth, it radiates the rich charm of Harbin. Through the dedicated efforts of generations of Friendship Palace staff, its food continues to uphold time‑honored techniques, using carefully selected ingredients, meticulous craftsmanship, and superior quality, consistently creating a green, natural, nutritious, and healthy culinary experience for consumers. This commitment has earned the hotel an excellent reputation and the trust of the public. Its main product lines include dozens of specialty foods—healthy staple dishes, meat products, soybean items, breads and pastries, pickled vegetables, and more—with steamed buns, bean curd packages, red sausage, soy products, and pickled melons particularly beloved by locals and widely praised. Friendship Palace’s red sausage, rooted in the traditional methods passed down from the Soviet expert‑assisted construction period, is crafted with a unique recipe, premium pork, and painstaking attention to detail, resulting in a delicately textured, long‑lasting aftertaste. It has become one of Harbin’s signature sausages. Meanwhile, Friendship Palace’s pickled melons are renowned for their carefully chosen varieties, limited production runs, strong seasonality, and meticulous processing; free of any additives, they boast clear broth, crisp flesh, and a refreshing, fragrant flavor that lingers delightfully on the palate. To this day, a folk song from the last century still echoes: “The deliciousness of these pickled melons spreads far and wide; exquisite craftsmanship ensures a crisp bite and a revitalizing spirit, while the lingering aroma of the Songhua River leaves an unforgettable impression.”
